This page is dedicated to the BrightStar dogs that have gone to the Rainbow Bridge.
May they forever live in our hearts.
miaMia

June 1999 - Oct 17, 2003

Mia was rescued from a puppy mill. When she came to BrightStar she had several medical issues. She was with a loving BrightStar foster for 8 months during her treatments. Everyone thought Mia was over her major health issues ; but on Oct 17, she went into convulsions from a high fever caused by a massive infection.

We were unable to save her. She knew love for the time she was with BrightStar and her foster family and the entire team will miss her dearly.

Rest in peace our beautiful girl.

neroNero

July 4, 2003- August 12, 2003

Nero and his mom (Anka) were saved from a high kill southern shelter. Given no medical care and the shelter's conditions, Nero watched three of his littermates perish in the shelter. BrightStar learned of the family's plight and with the help of some great TN people; we were able to get Anka and Nero to a vet within 24 hours. Nero was only 2 lbs: but a real fighter and with TLC and excellent medical care he survived for 5 more weeks.

Sadly, his little body just could not rebuild and he too perished on August 13th. Anka ( now Abby) was placed in a loving home.

Thor - June 1 1998 - August 8, 2003

This boy was a neglect case who was only with BrightStar a few days. Upon examinations, the vet advised euthanasia.

Thor is now at peace with our other BrightStar Fallen Stars.

Little Major - Oct 15, 2003- Dec 22, 2003

This little pup was only with BrightStar for 2 days. Upon vet examinations he was found to have serious congenial defect. We know something was not right with him; but we wanted to gave him a chance. His vision, head shaking issue was not due to an infection, he is seriously deformed. Besides his extra rib, toes, and retained testicles, he had "water on the brain" and his prognosis was grave. He was sent to Rainbow Bridge to relieve his pain and suffering.

courageCourage -May 1 , 2001- May 15, 2003 .

Courage joined BrightStar and right off the back we thought something might be wrong with him; but we tried to save him . After 2 foster care homes and four months of evaluations and training Courage was unable to show any affection or bond to humans. We suspected, due the the tips of his ears had notches craved out of them., he had been severely abused and beaten. Medical examinations revealed his brain just did not process correctly and sadly when he became aggressive one day ; we were advised to send him to Rainbow Bridge. Courage is now at peace and although he may never shown it, we think he knew in the end that many humans were kind . Sadly, this message was just a little late for this boy.

nikoNiko - May 1, 2001- June 10, 2004
This handsome 3 year old gentleman was surrendered by his owner, who was no longer able to meet his medical needs. As you can see, poor Niko had many ulcerated areas on his face and all over his body. He had been treated for a vague autoimmune disorder by his previous vet. Once he arrived at BrightStar, he want straight to our vet. Sadly Niko's condition was too advanced and in addition to the ulcerated areas, he had advanced Heartworm disease. He was in a lot of pain and humanely sent to Rainbow Bridge. He passed away in loving arms. Niko was only with BrightStar for 2 days; but we all miss him dearly. Niko prompted BrightStar to start a new special fund for dogs with severe medical problems. This way in the future we can try to help other dogs like Niko get better.

sunshineSunshine - June 1, 2003 - June 12, 2004
It is a sad day for BrightStar: One of our loveliest stars Sunshine, has passed on to the Rainbow Bridge Saturday June 12, 2004. This Memphis sweetheart had been ill for quite a while. Despite everyone's efforts and your support, she could not hold out any longer. She was held by the foster who was in the end, her "forever home". While it is hard to think of this as a success, this girl did not perish in that awful shelter, but learned that people love and care, that life, no matter how short, can be wonderful. We thank Sunshine's Guardian Angels and Foster Mom, Leslie... for being there for Sunshine. Their kindness and support is appreciated by the entire BrightStar team. We all wish we had a happier ending for Sunshine; but in the end she did have people like you and the BrightStar family who cared.
tinkerbelleFrances - June 14, 2004 - July 12, 2004

Frances was the first of Belle's pups to perish. The entire family was saved when the pups were only 4 -8 days old. Sadly, they were so overidden with parasites, even with the best veterinarian care 4 out of the 8 pups perished. Frances perished in TN a few days before the family was scheduled to arrived in NY. Belle and her surviving four puppies all found loving homes.

Flip - June 14, 2004 - Aug 5, 2004

Flip was the littlest boy of Belle's pups and only boy in the litter to perish. He fought for a few more weeks and actually started to gain weight ....we were hopeful, but our hopes were crushed on Aug 5, 2004.

fancyFancy - June 14, 2004 - Aug 9 , 2004

Fancy was the next girl to perish.
She fought so hard for her life.
She spent 5 days in intensive care just trying to win. Sadly, she lost in the end.

felicityFelicity - June 14, 2004 - Sept 12, 2004

Felicity was the little of the entire litter and she thrived and did well for quite a few weeks. We were all sure she make it along with the her four other siblings. She even moved in with BrightStar's consulting veterinarian, Dr.Linda A. Schneider, VMD . Dr Linda was so attached to this little girl she was to stay in her home forever.

Sadly by Sept 12th, even with all the supporting medical care.....Felicity joined Frances, Flip and Francy. They are all together now at the Bridge.

Eris: May 20, 2002 - August 25, 2004

Eris was surrendered by a breeder in Buffalo who thought she'd make money on puppies. She had a litter of 12 and evidently was in over her head. Eris and Mira came to BrightStar at the age of 6 months.

Eris had a fear issue and seemed to be ok with Nancy her foster mom, but when adopted out, Eris would revert back. It almost seemed like she felt most comfortable with Nancy, but it wasn't a good match because Nancy has a very alpha female German Shepherd who made it clear she and Eris would never be friends. Needless to say, Eris was moved around a bit. We thought she found the perfect home once again - but it seemed things just got worse. There was no other alternative for Eris than to be euthanized.

If you got to know Eris, she was a very loving dog and loved to play with other dogs (Ziel - a former BrightStar dog) but especially her buddy Harley. Eris was a typical shepherd where they always want to please you. Eris touched MANY hearts at BrightStar and she's often thought of. She will definitely be missed!

A big thank you goes to Kayse Konieczny (she adopted BrightStar's Elka). Kayse spent many hours putting the video together for Eris' memorial. Thanks to Nancy for fostering Eris for the length of time she did. She willingly took Eris back each time after an adoption. I would also like to thank The Alamed family -John & Sherri, they adopted Mira. They wanted to "officially" adopt Eris so that in the end, Eris had her forever home.

ladyLady - Jan 1997- Dec 4, 2004

Lady and her two brothers were dumped in a high kill shelter in Ohio three weeks before Christmas. Lady is a 7 year old with the energy of a 2 year old despite her emaciated condition. Lady shares her foster home with a male and female Shepherd and a cat and gets along wonderfully with all three. She craves attention and will sit with her head on your lap for hours. She loves to go for a ride and will do a little "song and dance" when she knows she is going. Although this sweet girl was thrown away like yesterdays trash the old saying is "one mans trash is another mans treasure". Maybe Lady could be your treasure.

We lost Lady to a quick and severe case of bloat yesterday. She died peacefully with her head in her foster's lap. In her foster won words "I will always remember Lady as my sweet "bag of bones" who asked for nothing more than a good meal, a ball to play with and as much love as I could give her.

Goodbye sweet Lady you will always be an Angel and have a special place in our hearts.

ainsleyAinsley 2003 - June 22, 2005

Ainsley was a great dog who had weathered neglect and back yard breeding, even though she had no proper vet care. She was often left in the yard tied up with no food or water. Elaine Manor, a fellow rescuer in Ohio, noticed her plight, and worked diligently to get Ainsley out of that bad situation. She contacted BrightStar, and we agreed to help this beautiful girl. She fostered with Bridget, her husband and her 7 year old son. It did not take them long to fall in love with Ainsley and her with them. She went in for a routine spay and did not make it, she had a blood clotting disorder*, and even though our vets tried valiantly to save her she did not make it. She had finally got to a better place, and she knew how much she was loved and wanted, and even though it was brief, she was happy, well fed and adored while she was with us.

*Ainsley had Von Willebrands disease. Dogs with von Willebrand's disease do not effectively utilize their platelets for blood clotting and therefore are more likely to have bleeding episodes associated with trauma or surgery.

Fritz: dob - August 2004fritz

Fritz (aka Trooper) has sadly passed on just after a couple of months after he was adopted (to his forever home in Harrisburg, PA).

Here is a note from Fritz' owner: "I want to thank you for the beautiful basket of plants. It came from my favorite shop. I also want to thank all the rescue folks who sent all the beautiful e-mails and poems. They meant a lot and helped me get through it.I still miss Trooper an awful lot.
I have one of my daughter's returned puppies (will be 2 in Oct) which I picked up in NJ the day after I and Sage and Nikona spread Trooper's ashes on the river where Trooper liked to walk. He (Spirit) and the 2 older girls are keeping me bus, but there was such a bond and a uniqueness with Trooper."
Max: June 1993 - August 5, 2005
mary maxMax came to live with us at Breezy Acres on Mother's Day of 2004. In
June of 2004, Max turned 11 years old. Max's 'dad' had recently died, and since no one in the family would take this very elegant senior citizen, Max came to live with us. Max must have been an extremely gorgeous boy in his prime because he was still very much so in his senior years. While here, Max had a wonderful 14 months where he constantly interacted with the rest of the 'gang'. He was quite a determined boy as he always seemed to look for 'a favorite' so as to pair up with him or her. Max, as all senior canines, was very special and deserved to live out his life in happiness and dignity while receiving 'lots of love' and TLC. I do believe that Max did just that
when he became part of the Breezy Acres' Gang. We all miss him but know
that he, as well as we, will await THAT GREAT REUNION when once again we will be a complete family.
Libbi: July 2003 - August 7, 2005
Please take a minute tonight, go outdoors and look up to the heavens.
The brightest star you will see is Libbi.
Libbi was proudly owned by Susan, a very integral volunteer of the BrightStar organization.

Mariska: DOB approx 2001 - August 25, 2005

mariskaMariska of BrightStar, aka "Ivan's Mom"

My mom was fostering Mariska and I fostered Ivan, Mariska's son. Mariska was a wonderful girl and if she had been able to have a life and beginning like she gave her boy Ivan, today would have been so different. For whatever reason, that was not meant to be. What a sad, sad thing. She was just too sensitive and too special for this world.

Mariska's only fault was a heart too big and too easily scarred by the ugliness she had encountered in her past. She continued to face everything with great fear and anxiety, and was never sure when or if she needed to defend herself. With person or dog, she had the potential to lash out unpredictably. It was decided we had to let her move on to wait for us at the Bridge.

Mariska did so well at the vet's. For the first time, she was able to relax. They gave her a sedative, and she was finally at peace. Her beauty shone through so completely, because she was truly without fear or anxiety. Her passing went quickly and easily.

She was loved. She is missed. May the next world be kinder to you, you deserved it so.

Jaden
October 17, 2003 - October 15, 2005
jaden
The only thing this gorgeous girl wanted in life was a safe place to call home and a loving person to whom she could devote her heart and souls.

The large family Jaden spent her first year and a half with lacked the time, patience and understanding to see what a terrific girl she was. Jaden was harshly punished for not behaving as they thought she should. With no one to show her how to behave or to give her the love she deserved, she became unmanageable. Her owner eventually surrendered Jaden to Lollypop Farm. Put in a cage, Jaden quickly grew even more fearful and distrustful, and the folks at Lollypop knew her best chance lay with BrightStar. Kathy Paris of BrightStar rescued Jaden last spring, a snarling, terrified ball of fur.

Slowly, under Kathy's patient and loving guidance, Jaden started down the long road to healing her wounded spirit. She learned to be a dog again, finding her place in the pack with her buddies Spirit, Gus, Gracie, Gia, Vito, Boss & two large Cockatoo's. Jaden also discovered one of her life's great joys-playing in the kiddie pool with Kathy's giant rottie, Vito. Most importantly, with Kathy, Jaden remembered again what every shepherd knows instinctively-how to love and trust her person. Her true soul began to shine through. No one who saw it will ever forget the image of Jaden, her entire body quivering and taut with fear, somehow finding the courage to reach out and ever so gently kiss the cheek of a 5-year-old child. That day, she showed us what made her so special. Despite her history, Jaden was the best of what a German Shepherd can be-loyal, loving, and courageous.

Tragically, the night of October 15, 2005, a terrible fire engulfed Kathy's house. Jaden, along with the rest of Kathy's pack, was too confused and afraid in those last few seconds to leave the only place she had ever known as home. Jaden perished in her home that night, along with Spirit, Gus, Gracie, Gia, Vito & Boss.
Jaden's time here with us was far, far too short. We take comfort knowing that she died having found her soul again with Kathy. Jaden, the jewel, will be sorely missed and lovingly remembered.
Godspeed, sweet girl.
Susie
1992 - November 14, 2005
susie
BrightStar was able to give Susie an additional year of a good life a dog should have.

Susie along with the others, is now at peace at the Rainbow Bridge.

Tiara
1999 - 2005
tiara
Tiara has sadly passed on. She was posted on our Private Adopt pages.

She was 6 years old and trained with basic commands. No health problems were reported as she had a vet appointment and was up to date on shots and was heartworm negative.

She was an inside dog and was kept outside in a fenced yard. When Tiara was allowed in the house it was with minimal time and not with the family.

It's too bad Tiara never found her forever home, it would have been with kids as she enjoyed being with kids. Tiara was very active, wanted to play all the time and have fun.

Rest in Peace Beautiful Girl, I know you have a loving family with you "Upstairs in Heaven".

Jasmine
1995 - January 5, 2006
jasmen
Jasmine came into BrightStar when she was 8 years old. She was used for breeding her entire life and in her foster home, she was definitely out of her element. She was afraid of everything and didn't know a thing. She soon learned how to act and began to love life again. She had a glow in her eye that wasn't there when she first came to BrightStar.

Jasmine found her forever home in Lockport, NY with Marge Clarke. Marge and Jasmine were inseparable, and it was clear they were the perfect pair! She was even the fastest adopting senior dog BrightStar ever had. Jasmine was finally home, after 8 years of torment, she was happy.

Unfortunately on 1/5/06, Jasmine passed to the bridge. She died in her mothers' arms. She had cancer and despite all of Marge's efforts, it was too late. It had spread into her lungs and she was able to leave with happy memories, instead of her solemn past. Jasmine will always be remembered, have fun sweet angel, you deserve only the best.
"Senior" Max
1995 - 1/20/2006
sr. max
Here's what we'd like to say about Max, with one of our favorite pictures of him.

"Max was loyal, patient, stubborn/smart, spunky and HANDSOME, a true GSD.

His slight disability never stopped him from following his mom everywhere -and we mean EVERYWHERE (the powder room was not off limits). We are forever grateful that BrightStar and Mary gave us the opportunity to give Max his very own yard and home, his daily walks, relaxing evenings around the house, putting his face in dad's hand and getting his nose rubbed 'til he fell asleep, and his goodnight kisses. He was good-natured through all the tests and treatments for his liver illness, and loved by everyone who met him for his sweet disposition. There are two kittens who are alive and well because of Max and they will always be a tribute to him.

We miss him everyday - We had six months and wanted six years. But we'll meet him in our next lives, and we'll have his leash ready."

Flash
August 2005 - February 2006
flash
"Flash" was a 6 month old neutered male German Shepherd Dog mix.

Flash had a rough start on life. He was brought into the local shelter when he was a young pup and has been adopted and returned a couple times, mostly do to being too much to handle.

I received a message from a friend telling me about this young pup who had some dominant issues, but was a very sweet boy. I was asked if I would be willing to foster, evaluate and work with him. I agreed in a heartbeat.

Unfortunately there wasn't anything we could have done for Flash.

No more pain for you, young Boy.

Kodi
2003 - February 28, 2006
kodi
Sadly we announce another passing of a BrightStar dog, Kodi:

  • Kodi touched us all who feel the pain of what these dogs go through. I am so sorry for the loss of his life. But he knew he was safe with the BrightStar Team.
    -Tanya Dee Jones Hartmann

  • My sympathy is with the entire BrightStar team. This is a loss to all of us. Thank goodness Kodi went peacefully and with someone at his side. I hope he is now in heaven having a ball and frolicking with the other BrightStar kids that have passed before him. Leslie, I can't remember if I've met you, but regardless.... I am sending you a big hug. Please try to remember all the good you did for this beautiful boy.Peace and love to you all..... you are the GREATEST group of people I've ever known.

Annie
1997 - February 28, 2006
annie
"Annie was smart, funny, and brave. She came to a house with two other German Shepherd Dogs already in residence. She studied them (and her new human companion) and quickly figured out a place for herself. She became the lead dog on the walks, proudly picking out the complicated path through the fields; she appointed herself chief watch dog (and in spite of her relatively small size, no one would have been foolish enough to challenge her). But once strangers were inside and established as friends, she greeted them cordially; invariably visitors liked her the best. She had several favorite, comfortable places in her home where she liked to rest, observe, and think. She asked for little more than an occasional rawhide chew, which she attacked with gusto; and love and affection, which she received and gave in abundance.

Her life before she came to BrightStar was hard, and her body bore some of the marks of the 'wear and tear' of that early life, but in the end she had found a home where she was valued and appreciated, by both humans and fellow dogs. "I really like you," one of her friends said recently; "you have such an honest smile."
A week before she died, Annie suffered a sort of convulsive attack. A battery of tests--some of them performed twice--revealed no clear reason for what had happened to her. She held on for a few days, then rapidly deteriorated, suffering a number of smaller convulsions and becoming unsteady on her feet; then she was unable to eat or drink. None of the treatments that were tried made the slightest bit of difference. Finally she curled up, went to sleep, and did not wake up again."
"Rest in peace, little girl; you were very much loved."
Jill (Annie's Mom)

Annie aka Jacey was BrightStar's Guardian Angel Coordinator, Tanya's first foster. "She is my first of my fosters that I lost. She was my first little girl too. She is the one who made me love those females. She was such good friends with Bear. God this kills me." Tanya
Ralphie
1992 - March 3, 2006
ralphie
Hello to all,

I have sad news to share with you. I pulled Ralphie on Friday after having him go through neutering and vaccinations. Prior to us picking him up on Friday he was given some morphine so he would be comfortable. Ralphie was 13 yrs old and was in the shelter because his owner had died. Ralphie was than driven to Murphy & Dennis (BrightStar volunteers) in the Buffalo, NY area on Friday evening. It was extremely sad to watch him in my vehicle. He was so uncomfortable riding but was enjoying the view. His face and along his spine were covered with tumors. Murphy & Dennis made him very comfortable Friday evening. In fact Dennis slept with the poor guy Friday night. He had an appointment to see Dr. Jim on Saturday morning for a once over. Dr. Jim was quite upset for all that Ralphie had been put thru in the past few days. It turns out that Ralphie was loaded with cancer. He could barely walk due to arthritis and old age. Ralphie is now at rest and enjoying his time with the only person he ever knew.

I made a very bad call pulling Ralphie, having him neutered and vaccinated and putting him thru the travels on Friday.. Ralphie should have been put to rest after his holding time at RAS (Rochester Animal Services), not put in adoptable cages. We cannot save the world and what I did to Ralphie trying to "save" him was awful, I have learned a very important lesson here. The plus side of all this is that Ralphie did get to spend time with Dennis and was put to rest in a warm friendly place with Murphy & Dennis at his side.

REST IN PEACE RALPHIE.....I apologize to you old guy

Sir Winston
Approx 2002 - March 14, 2006
sirwinston
For the BrightStar organization, 2006 has started off losing some great Rescued Dogs. Sadly another rescued dog has made the inevitable trip to Rainbow Bridge.
Sir Winston is gone. We took him in this morning for x-rays and blood work. He has not been using his right rear leg since Sunday so we felt it was possibly a knee injury and decided to have him x-rayed. After seeing the x-rays, Macedon Veterinary Care Doctors stated the x-rays are the worst they have ever seen. They recommended the only humane thing to do is let him go. (That is probably the reason he was not eating, due to the severity of pain he was experiencing). The Doctors at Macedon did comment on how sweet he was even being in so much pain!

REST IN PEACE BIG GUY.

Sir Winston thanks Ruth & Sheila for getting him a warm bed, shelter, food and lots of love. Paul & Roxanne, thanks for the Guardian Angel wings you gave to him.

Brody
Approx 1990 - October 31, 2005
brody
Brody came to BrightStar from a shelter in Connecticut where his time was very limited. Once I saw his face, I knew that this "soulful" senior citizen MUST not be put to sleep. At the time of his rescue, Brody was estimated to be around 13 years old. He arrived at Breezy Acres on November 1, 2003 after a grueling trip. Because of his arthritic condition, I did not think that this sweet boy would be with us for 6 months. Brody could not even walk when he disembarked from his trip. This wonderful boy, however, with th e help of medications and much love, had so much determination that he was up and walking and sometimes even running while enjoying his freedom in his fenced in one acre playground. While spending his time with us, Brody came to know that life was good and that he was truly loved. I cannot say enough about my precious Brody...words cannot express what this boy meant to all who met him. Brody was the sweetest of the sweet. Seniors are special, and this boy was VERY SPECIAL. Oddly enough, Brody did not succomb to his '"aged body", but to a rapidly spreading mast cell cancer. Brody was put to rest on October 31, 2005 - two years after he joined his extended family where he experienced warmth and love. This wonderful boy etched his mark on all of us, and we await the time when we will be reunited forever. Good bye for now, sweet Brody. You are sorely missed.

REST IN PEACE SWEET BRODY.

4-14-06 Final Update:

It with great sadness that I tell you Reva went to the Rainbow Bridge this morning. Reva had stopped eating on Tuesday and became increasing very unhappy. As you know she had Irritable Bowel Syndrome, which can be controlled with the right combo of diet and/or meds. It just seemed that each time Reva had an episode it took her longer and longer to bounce back. This time she didn’t want to bounce back and I think this was her way of telling me that she just had enough. The kindest act I could give her was to let her go. She will be missed very much.

I love you little girl, god speed.

Madison
Approx 2001 - August 19, 2006

Madison was loyal, loving and a beautiful girl, then there was also her stubborn side! She came to live with us in January 2005. We opened our home and our hearts to her and she quickly became part of our family.

Her life before BrightStar was not very pleasant which caused her to have some issues. She had an extremely bad spinning problem, which we tried to curb with both medicine and training. Needless to say, some days were better than others. We don’t know if it bothered her, but she sure had a good time driving us “kookoo”!

Her favorite thing to do was to play ball or run around with her stuffed frog in her mouth. We had enough balls inside and outside of our house to take care of most of the dogs in our neighborhood! Oh, and lets not forget how much she liked to play with plastic milk crates.

When Maddy got sick on that last Friday night we had no idea how serious it was. Saturday morning we took her to the vet only to find that she had been diagnosed with “bloat”. We kissed and hugged her before she went into surgery, thinking she would be back home with us in a few days. But, during surgery, we got the call that she would only have a 50/50 chance of survival. That was when we had to make our fateful decision to put her down. It was the hardest thing we ever had to do as a family. But we do know that she is at peace and nothing else can harm her again. She is now with her friends at the Rainbow Bridge.

You were “Daddy’s Girl”, “Mommy’s pain the in the butt” and “Justin’s Forever Friend”.

Rest in peace girlie, we will love and cherish your memories forever.

yaska
Yaska was at one time a happy little Dobbie mix. I thought she was a very special girl, so full of life and happy every time she saw me. I never had any problems with her. We decided to move her to another foster so she would get more exposure. That is when I saw the other side of my sweet little Yaska. As we were helping her in the vehicle she got a bit assertive, actually turned and tried to bite one of us. At that point I figured someone may have touched an unknown sore spot or at least that is what I was hoping for. That was not the case, as time went on she would randomly bite people. No rhyme or reason, no warning and unprovoked. We had to say goodbye to my sweet Yaska. She is now on Rainbow Bridge where she cannot hurt anyone and can have fun and enjoy her time with other dogs, never having to worry about humans again.

Goodbye my sweet Yaska, I will always miss and Love you...

Ruth

You were a sweet young girl,
with such a carefree soul.
So full of energy,
Ready to run around all day and play
Always happy and never aware of any wrong doings.
One would wonder, what your past life held,
were you mistreated, or did you just not know any better?
Regardless of those incidents,
you loved with all your heart.

Now you're free,
So let go of any fears you held inside,
No one can hurt you now,
and life has no limits.

Spend your days running and playing to your hearts content,
and remember you were loved and always will be.

Rest in peace Yaska.

Zoei
September 2003- September 2006
zoei
Zoei was a sweet, loving young girl, she gave plenty of loe to everyone and asked for nothing in return. Dumped at a shelter by the only family she'd known, her spirit still remained strong. She joined Brightstar and a foster family. Zoei loved her foster mom, and all her fur "sibblings". She spent her days playing with them, and just hanging out with her foster mom.

One could never know this sweet girls real story. One bite which we knew of, but no broken skin and it was explained as a misunderstanding, more on the humans behalf than Zoei's. But a later call from someone who knew Zoei in the past relieved a different story. Seems our sweet Zoei had inflicted some more serious bites in the past than we were aware.

Everyone who'd met Zoei since she'd joined BrightStar had a hard time believing this as she'd shown us all what a sweet girl she was. At our "Meet and Greets", Zoei was great with all the kids she met and never hesitated with anyone as some dogs do when they get nervous. But as time went by, Zoei showed a different side with men, growling at them and not trusting them. Whether Zoei was mistreated by a man or not, we don't know.

In the end, Zoei's foster mom and BrightStar decided it was not fair to this sweet girl to ask her to start a new life with a new family, nor would it be fair to that family. Leslie, Zoei's foster mom loved her very much and was holding Zoei to the very end. It was a very hard decision for Leslie but the right decision for Zoei. Zoei is now at Rainbow Bridge and she cannot hurt anyone again, nor can anyone hurt her. Zoei was loved very much during the few months she spent with Leslie and will always have a special place in her heart.

I just wanted to let everyone know we lost Momma Glori (Sadie) today. She had a very aggressive cancer and the Kane’s, Gary & Christine did everything possible for her. She went to her own vet, our vet Dr. Jim and a specialist. All confirmed her condition.
She had a wonderful home for her final days and I know how much she was loved by Gary & Christine. Christine even cooked for her girl Sadie. Glori/Sadie did all in her power to raise her 4 beautiful pups and she would certainly be proud of them now. She leaves 4 pups behind: Macy, her only female pup has made her home with Robin & Jim Pollot, Sydney who has made his home with Jamie Schuster & family, Jack who has made his home with Palmero’s and Blaz who has made his home with Cindy Arnold & family.

This was devastating news to say the least.

I know Glori/Sadie is watching her pups from Rainbow Bridge…Glori/Sadie we LOVE and miss you...

I want to send a SPECIAL THANKS TO PRICE for helping us save Glori and her 4 pups. Without Price she would never have arrived at BrightStar.

Ruth A. Urban, Founder

How awfully sad. I hope she did not have to suffer too much. And she did give everything to those puppies. They were so healthy & happy when they arrived at BrightStar. And I'll never forget the story I was told of her jumping over the gate to be with them. Her puppy Blaz is doing absolutely wonderful. He was weighed in at 78.4 lbs. at 10 months of age. He is beautiful and healthy and loving. I know in my heart he had gotten a lot of those wonderful qualities from Glori (Sadie), his Mom. You could tell from all those newborn photos taken on their trip to BrightStar how much she loved her pups.

And now I am even happier & prouder to have one of her babies. I will treasure those first photos always.
My regrets, Cindy

David and I are very sad to hear this news. I gave 'Glover' now "Jack" an extra big hug today, for his mom. Take care all.

With sincere condolences,

"Dexter, our Brave Hero, saved the lives of our dear children and gave up his own on October 16, 2006. During the terrible Surprise Storm in Buffalo, NY October 12th and 13th, we had hundreds of fallen tree branches in our backyard and were without power for 8 days.

Unfortunately during the cleanup of our yard, our dear foster Dexter found a live electrical wire that no one else saw behind our garage, where our kids often play, and died instantly after it merely grazed the side of him.

He was such a sweet and lovable dog. So well tempered and great with our kids and his other doggie playmates. He would have made a great pet for someone. We all miss him dearly."

"We met and adopted Indigo on September 8th and never looked back. We instantly fell in love with her. She was content just being with us yet always game for any adventure. She had a unique ability of sensing emotions and always knew when someone needed a big kiss from her. There was never a creek or pond she could pass by without at least a splash or a stick too big to pick up and run with. There were so many things we were looking forward to but time was not on our side.

Our baby girl was taken away suddenly just after almost two months. Indigo will forever have a special place in our hearts.

We want to say thank you to Sharon and the BrightStar team for showing Indigo nothing but love for the first 4 ½ months of her life."

"I don't know about anyone else, but I didn't get much sleep last night. You see, searching for a lost dog is a very strange experience. You find yourself trying to think like the dog, where will I go, where can I hide, where am I running, why am I running? I guess we'll never know for sure what state of mind Terra was in, maybe running was some kind of freedom. Maybe things are better over there, over that hill, in that gulley. As your searching, you keep looking, hoping she'll just come running out. Every little thing that moves gives you that little startle, but then nope. When you think you've searched enough, you just search some more. My niece Courtney and I found it very hard to leave the area yesterday, even after 7 hrs. of searching. But you just feel so sickeningly sad. We were planning to be back down there this weekend, but now we'll just tend to our trivial chores. I just want to say I am proud of everyones effort, and dedication. And I am glad to be a part of this orginization. Everyone please hug their dog(s) tonight, because this could have happened to any of us. Karen and David, you are in my thoughts, as well as Joe. Grateful as always," Curt

"As all of you can imagine, Dave and I are devastated. I have been crying most of the weekend. I don't know how to thank EVERYONE! All of you jumped to help in many and any ways you could and I sooo appreciate it. We loved that girl and so did Joe. I can only hope Terra is finally wagging her tail over the bridge. Again thanks to everyone, but a very special thanks to Curt, Kari, Nancy, Rose, Murphy, Shelia and Ruth. I am so very glad and proud to be a member of this Organization.

Terra girl you will always have a special place in my heart."

I don't know who all knew about/remembers Sal at BrightStar, but wanted to let everyone know we put him down this past Wednesday 11/15/06. His cancer was getting him and his spirit was just gone, all he wanted to do was sleep and it hurt him to get up and walk. We had to pick him up and help him steady himself every morning when it was time to get up. Up till the past month, he always did his "happy dance" around the house when we got home or when he was excited, but he was at the point he could hardly get up and greet us when we got home let alone get excited about something. He had a great short time here though and was an amazing dog. I have no regrets taking him in knowing what his outcome was to be. He got everything he deserved and a lot more! He went very peacefully in my arms and didn't fight at all which helped me a lot to know it was his time.

She was 6 weeks old with both of her ears standing straight up. Java had a very severe Heart Murmur (grade 5) and was not going to be able to out grow it. She was so cute and adorable and we miss her dearly. Java will never be forgotten and always hold a special place in our hearts."

Reni (aka Princess)
My Sweet Reni, I promised you that you would never feel pain and loneliness.

I cleaned your slate of past memories and promised to fill your remaining years with hope and happiness. We knew your fight would be tough, but with me by your side, we would it fight together and give it a try.You watched from your crate, the dogs running outside, they sniffed the
grass and wouldn't come inside. You saw them run tirelessly chasing the ball, only to lie and bask in the sun. You heard the children laugh and saw them play. I kept promising you, "That will be you some day".Children to play in the light of the sun, people to care when you had noone.

I promised you this and so much more. The kind words of your family, and the warmth of a hug. A family of your own, I promised you this, and with your passing tonight, I realize this. No more pain, now you can run free, chasing the wind, and smelling the grass. I gave you your family, it was here all the time.
Rest in Peace my forever friend, my family was yours and you were ours.

Cheetah
11/12/05 - 08/28/07
Cheetah had a rough start in life. Neglected, abused, attacked by other dogs, hit by a car, and escaping euthanasia twice, all before she was a year old. She came into our lives with more personality than we thought was possible. A zany character, she brought us so much laughter and joy. Among her favorite activities were playing ice-cube hockey on the kitchen tile, walking herself around the house with her leash on while holding the loop end in her mouth, and throwing and chasing her toys. Oh, how she loved her Kongs! We’re fairly certain that she did some of this just for our entertainment, sometimes stopping her playing to make sure we were watching before returning to her goofiness.

Sadly, the trauma of her puppyhood had created an intense fear of other dogs and made her increasingly aggressive towards them, feeling the need to attack before they did. The culmination of this was when she went through a second story window screen to get to our neighbor’s GSD. Remarkably, she was unharmed by the fall, but it became apparent that she had some issues that she couldn’t overcome. We knew that, for her own safety and peace of mind, there was no choice but to have her euthanized.

Now, there is no fear, no uncertainty, and she is running and playing with the many other BrightStar children at the Rainbow Bridge. She is at last at peace.

We would like to thank all of the wonderful people at BrightStar German Shepherd Rescue, foster mom Susan Teemley, Pat Werner of Family Dog Obedience, and Susan of Friends of Schuyler County Animal Rescue, for bringing her into our lives and giving Cheetah a chance to know what a loving, caring family is all about. She stole our hearts and we will miss her deeply.

colt
Colt was a shining example of how truly wonderful a german shepherd can be. He was as handsome and regal as he was intelligent and loving. He had a heart that was as big as he was. He was mature and protective, yet playful and gentle. He loved playing frisbee, ball, going for car rides and just being with us. There was not a day that passed that we were not grateful and blessed to have him as part of our family. Our hearts are broken without him, but as I whispered to Colt as he closed his eyes for the last time, 'You will always be with us.'

We love and miss you, Colt.

Peaches
To our beautiful Peaches. You were such a sweet, loving and beautiful little girl. In the short time we had you, we knew we had a special angel with us. It breaks our heart to think of how you were taken from us at only 10 months of age and what a great life you should have had. The bad spay surgery you had prior to coming to BrightStar can only make us imagine how terrible things must have previously been for you. Please know that we miss you terribly and will always love you.

Love your part-time foster,

Paul and Roxanne

Barrick
1996 - 2008
I arranged to foster Barrick in August 2006 since there always seems to be too many dogs and not enough fosters. He was found roaming a college campus in Ohio and was rescued locally and treated for heartworm before being healthy enough for transport. It was estimated that he was 10 at that time. I agreed to help him because there was "something" in his eyes and also in his picture he seemed to be a smaller size than my large female GSD Lacoda. Figuring that adding another one to my pack of three already would not be a problem.

I was SHOCKED when Barrick arrived as he stood AS TALL AS THE KITCHEN COUNTERS! Although he was massive within days I soon came to fall in love with this large, regal gentle giant.

Barrick loved to climb up on me and snooze (lying directly on top and stretched out) with his huge head resting on my shoulder. He loved our romps on the beach and by the canal and never hesitated to follow me EVERYWHERE including stuffing himself (with Lacoda) in my bathroom every morning. It was not long before I pleaded my case of falling in love that Ruth from BrightStar let me keep him.

He was diagnosed with cancer in March 2007 and with the help of my trusted vet I decided not to put him through treatment as he had been through so much before coming to me. I wanted him to have quality time with me not just quantity.

On February 6, 2008 he suddenly collapsed and within an hour I lost him. My heart aches for losing him and I can only hope I will be worthy enough to see him again at the Rainbow Bridge. He taught me so much in our short time together.

Rest In Peace Sweet Boy! I Love You!
Trapper
Rest in Peace
Sept. 2007 - 12/17/07

Trapper and his six siblings were "found" on a pig farm in Morrow County, OH and brought to a high kill animal shelter. Three of his siblings were adopted locally before BrightStar committed to the family and the remaining four came to New York - Trapper, Rachel, Blay and Tin Tin.

Trapper and Rachel came to foster with us on December 8, 2007. They arrived malnourished, with kennel cough, coccidea and conjunctivitis. They were unsure of humans and really not sure what good food was. In all honesty, we were more concerned about Rachel's health than Trapper's at first - Trapper weighed 16 lbs. and Rachel only 12. We took them immediately to the vet and were back three times during the week.

Trapper took a turn for the worse on Saturday night and Sunday morning we rushed him to the emergency vet. I did not want to leave him there, but I was told I had to for his sake and he needed IV treatment, etc. They still were not sure what was wrong.

Well, we were told it was parvo and he was very compromised from everything else he was fighting. His chances were 50/50. Trapper passed to the Rainbow Bridge during the night on December 17, 2007. When I was told I just sobbed and part of me was very angry.

Trapper, your foster mom will NEVER get over losing you. I knew something was terribly wrong. You were a sweet, gentle boy, and I walked out of the house that Sunday morning with you in my arms and told your sister, Rachel, you would be home soon. We just needed to make you better. I broke my promise. I let you and Rachel down.

The only good thing that resulted from this was that Rachel tested negative for parvo and Blay and TinTin never got sick.

Trapper, I loved you little boy. I hope you are running and having fun at the Bridge. Please know Rachel is safe, happy and loved. We will find her the home she needs and deserves, that I can promise you.

Love forever,
Foster Parents Darcy and Michael and sister Rachel.
King
1996 - 03/07/08
It appeared that King had never had it easy. He had come from a home where neglect and abuse was tolerated. We agreed to be a “forever foster” to King after reading his story and knowing that all he deserved was a loving home and family to take care of him for the reminder of his time…

King was 12 when we got him. He could hardly hold his hind-end up, his coat was a mess, and his ears were so infected that they were full of ulcers. We knew that it wouldn’t be long for King, but while he was in our home we made sure that he had a warm doggie bed to lay on, had plenty of dog food to eat, and of course, plenty of treats to eat. King loved to go for walks, and trot around with our other dogs. He always had pep in his step.

After the New Year, we could tell the meds that King had been on for his hips were not helping as much, he was switched to another in hopes that it may help. At that point we knew his days were numbered. On March 7 we came home to find that King had passed.

It was not easy having King pass. We knew the place where he had come from and what he had put up with for so long, but we can find a bit of peace in knowing that in his last few months with us, King was truly loved and always full with treats.

Ulric - RIP Sweet Angel
Ulric (called Ricky by his foster family) arrived from NC with his two sisters and brothers and sadly was only with us for 9 days before falling ill. He was diagnosed with Parvo, and although he wasn't showing strong symptoms, he was quickly taken from us within two days of becoming ill at 9 weeks old.

Ricky - you touched our lives and your pawprints will be forever left on our hearts. You made us laugh everyday with your goofiness, and soothed our souls with your sweet kisses that you would give us. You had so much love to give, you were so full of life and we will never get over the fact that we lost you like this. I am so sorry that we couldnt save you, but know we love you so much and that you will always have us as your forever family. Thank you for bringing all the joy to our lives that you have in the short time we had you. We miss you and we love you baby.

Approx. 2003 - 2009
Rafe made his way to Western New York under difficult circumstances. Found tied to a tree on a farm in Tennessee, he had a serious case of heartworm and a bullet lodged in his back. Through the wonderful care from All Creatures Animal Hospital and his foster parents Murphy and Dennis, Rafe regained his health and through what only can be described as destiny, became a member of our family in May 2007.

He taught us many lessons, the most important of which was showing my daughter the special bond that exists between people and dogs. While I'm saddened that we didn't get to do everything I wanted together, I take comfort in knowing that he found his forever home and that he also experienced that special bond.

Good bye wise boy. We'll meet you at the Rainbow Bridge.

Lily
2006 - 2010
Three years ago this comingAugust someone shot a beautiful white german shepherd and left her for dead in a field in Georgia. The dog warden foundher and took her to the local shelter. Unfortunately they are too poor to afford any vetting and sh would have sat on a cold cement floor all weekend as it was a Friday afternoon. Someone contacted BrightStar and we made arrangements to get her to a hospital where she spent a week getting well enough to come to be my foster. She became Lily and was as beautiful as her name.

Lily had advanced heartworm and needed treatment to save her life. But before we could treat her we found out she was also anemic. Lily had a very strong will to live and survived the anemia, heart worm treatment and her spay.

Lily was adopted by Chris and Theresa DelPrince in Buffalo right after the new year 2 1/2 years ago. They had a new baby and Lily became the 2nd most wonderful addition to their family.

Lily became sick recently and when she didn't respond to the antibiotics the took her back for x-rays. It was discovered that Lily was full of cancer.

Lily became a BrightStar in the sky tonite at 6:30 pm. Her life was all too short here but it gives me great comfort to know her last 3 years were spent being loved and pampered.

So when you are looking at the stars please say hi to the newest member, Lily.

Joey
10/10/08 - 11/10/10
Our sweet boy Joey was taken from us on November 10, 2010. Joey filled our hearts with so much joy in the short time he was with us. His free spirit, boundless energy, and goofball antics will be forever remembered in wonderful memories that we have. His brother Tiger will surely miss Joey’s companionship. We have cremated Joey and will be spreading his ashes in the one place he absolute adored – our pond. He was always swimming and trying to catch fish. We hold a very special place in our hearts for our dear Joey.

Love,

Your Mom & Dad - Jennifer & Brandon St. John

I haven’t forgotten the night I picked up “Hooch” from a transport off the Thruway. He sat on my lap the whole way home he was so small. Hooch looked more like a “Joey” so with that name he went. I fostered him for a few weeks until I told Jen and Brandon about this really nice pup I had. They were hooked the night they met him. Second step was to make sure Tiger would like his new brother. Luckily the two boys accepted each other - Joey and Tiger. It was great to see that Joey found his fur-ever home! The best part is as a foster mom, that I would continue watching him grow up.

Godspeed Joey you will be missed very much!

With Much Love,

Roscoe
July 2011

Getting through the days without my boy Roscoe....As a BrightStar Rescue he was loved so much.

He can still be seen on the BrightStar web site under coat colors "sable". Roscoe was always a ham for photos!

One of his really creative moves was watching me open a door then learning to do it! Sadly after surving intestinal cancer and dealing with chronic renal failure he got high blood pressure and surrendered to acute renal failure. I knew what I had to do and it was a very difficult decision, but he let me know that it was his time. I realized that Roscoe had greater things to do and was telling me he was ready. He went peacefully and I took comfort in that. Ruth was my rock who bought Roscoe to me. I am so ever grateful for her kind heart and caring! She is now reunited with my boy and many others doing those greater things! Thank you for bringing my Roscoe to me. I had many wonderful years with him! Ruth and Roscoe, you are truly Bright Stars and will always be loved!

Lacie
August 2011

My husband and I adopted a Brightstar dog in June of 2011. She was diagnosed with Parvo about 2 months after we adopted her and we were forced to put her to sleep. Her name was Seneca when we adopted her, but we renamed her Lacie. She was one of the “finger lakes” dogs. Niki Banke was her foster mom.

Lacie the love of my life for the two short months we had her. She was such a little firecracker. I noticed she had lost her appetite on a Wednesday night. I tried to wait it out thinking it was just a small stomach bug. Friday afternoon my husband and I took her to the vet to find out she was infected with Parvo. We stayed with her while our hearts broke and went to sleep. She is still in our hearts and forever will be loved by all who knew her.

Rest in peace my Lacie love…. I loved you very very much. I’m so sorry you had to leave us so quickly. Know that you were cherished and we were so lucky to have you in our lives even if it was just for a short time. I’ll see you again someday.

I thought of you today, but that is nothing new.
I thought about you yesterday, and days before that too.
I think of you in silence, I often speak your name.
All I have are memories and a picture in a frame.
Your memory is a keepsake, from which I'll never part.
God has you in his arms. I have you in my heart.

I love you little girl.

Thank you so much!
